Valley Bible Fellowship – The Soul Factory
Bakersfield, CA
Vision
- Create an innovative, customized space to fit a growing 12,000-member church for the lowest possible cost.
- Build a facility that matches the industrial structures in the surrounding area.
- Portray the Pastor’s vision of “Turning the Church Inside Out.”
Challenge
- Get it designed and built in 8 months, on time and on budget.
- Local quotes all came in too high and they needed at least 40,000 square feet of space.
- Reduce HVAC costs and noise control.
- Design acoustics and stage for a good rock ‘n roll feel, as well as large productions.
Solution
- The design build team value engineered a solution to come in at under $200.00 a square foot for a total of $7.5 million, compared to the initial bid of $12 million.
- CharestCorp designed a 190-foot clear span metal frame structure which literally turned the church inside out by revealing the structural steel on the outside of the building.
- The sanctuary capacity of 3,900 people was designed for future expansion. It was specifically engineered to be “ready-made” for a mezzanine that would eventually seat an additional 2,500 church members.
- VBF’s HVAC system was designed to be high volume and low velocity for the large space. It was built into the stage (underneath) and still today is completely silent.
